Portable Applications are really easy to use you do not have to install them just double click and start using. Google has an infamous propensity to keep projects in beta for an unusually long time, and now somebody has gone to the trouble of quantifying just how widespread the testing tag is at the Internet giant.

"Of the 49 Google products we could find, 22 are in beta. That's 45 percent," not including Google Labs projects, according to a Wednesday blog post at Pingdom, a Web site performance monitoring company. "We're so used to seeing the little 'beta tag next to the various Google product logos that we almost don't register it anymore. We even had to double-check that Gmail really still was in beta."

Google told me a few months ago the beta tag would come off Gmail "soon," but clearly the company is leery of doing so.

Royal Pingdom was mystified by Google's criteria for beta labeling, and I have been, too.

It's true that it's easier to treat Web-based apps as a work in progress: a company can upgrade the entire user base to a new version of Flickr, say, just by updating the software on the central servers rather than having to cajole millions of users to install a patch. But there comes a point where labeling something as beta gives the impression that the project's backer is scared to make a commitment to prospective users or customers.

And sometimes Google seems conflicted. For example, Google offers a Gmail service level agreement to paying Google Apps customers, and the point of an SLA is to assure business customers they can count on something working. Yes, Gmail has been in flux since its introduction in 2004, but enough is enough. I'm a little surprised Microsoft doesn't make more hay of this when taking potshots at its rival.

From the team behind DealQUE, we have a new service called Pikchur, a startup that posts your photos to a myriad of social media sites where you have residing accounts. What you can do is upload an image directly through Pikchur or send one to your assigned Pikchur email address via MMS or email from your phone or computer.

In concept, Pikchur is similar to TwitPic in that you can upload a photo and it will appear in your Twitter stream. A caption can be manually added for direct and MMS uploads, and your subject line will be the caption for photos sent via email. Pikchur moves beyond Twitter, however, and sends your images to a handful of other services like Tumblr, Pownce, Facebook (via the Pikchur Facebook application), FriendFeed and Jaiku. The result is a broad distribution for your photo within the micro-blogosphere, giving you a one-stop shop for immediate photo sharing.

There aren’t any import options for automatically bringing in photos from other photo-sharing sites for redistribution purposes, but a little bird has told me that Pikchur is working on some upcoming Flickr integration, so perhaps such import options will be added in the near future. Given the lack of photo importing for redistribution purposes, Pikchur really caters to mobile users that would like a quick and easy way to send out photos while on the go, so its updating capabilities sent out to microblogging platforms is appealing in its simplicity for this purpose.

Nevertheless, Pikchur is a handy service that makes photo distribution a brainless task, especially from an operational standpoint around your email. As services like Xoopit better turn your email into a searchable media database, microblogging and other auto-distribution methods can become very useful as media-sharing tools for a wide range of users.

If you've been on the hunt for a tool that lets you chat with friends or clients that speak a different language, MeGlobe is a really simple solution that does all the work for you. Like Meebo, it will turn a single open browser window in a Webtop where you can manage your buddy list and chat windows. There's no software to install, and it handles 15 languages with relative ease.

I gave it a spin using French to English, and as advertised it translates in real time. You see what the person wrote in small letters, with the translation showing up right above. It doesn't matter what language the other user is typing in--everything gets converted to your default language. Changing it with a quick drop down will go back and reverse-translate previous chat items--it's very cool.

Other solutions for real-time chat translation have come from many places including Google. However, Google's system required using chat bots that act as a middle-man. MeGlobe's solution is far simpler, putting the entire process behind what the user sees.

In the future, I'd like to see MeGlobe tap into existing IM networks instead of requiring you to plug into its own, something I'm expecting based on a rather cryptic blog entry from earlier this week.
